Basic explanation

What is it for?

Calculate, theoretically, what volume of a more concentrated HCl solution corresponds to a less concentrated final solution. The two concentrations must be expressed in mol/L.

  1. Look for the initial concentration in mol/L on the product sheet. Do not directly enter a percentage.
  2. Enter the final volume required by the procedure.
  3. Enter the final concentration in mol/L; It must be less than or equal to the initial one.
  4. Read the calculation and compare it with the procedure and the safety sheet before any manipulation.

Scientific explanation

The dilution equation preserves the amount of substance: C1 × V1 = C2 × V2. It is only valid when C1 and C2 are in the same unit and there is no chemical reaction that changes the substance. The calculation does not define the safe method of preparation.
